Well, The View From Saturday is over, and we are back into our Reading book. Spelling tests, grammar, and vocab will all be taken from the stories that we read, and our nightly homework will center around these topics as well. The class voted for Windcatcher by Avi to be the next class novel, and we will begin that once we return from the holiday break.

We have begun reading the novel A View from Saturday. Our Spelling, Vocabulary, and Reading Comprehension will all be derived from the chapters we are reading. Additionally, we will be having discussion with whole and small groups about the characters in the story, the language in the story, and the story elements such as setting, plot, etc.

9/20/10
This week we will be exploring character and character traits. A well developed character in a story can make you unable to put the book down. A character may have traits that you can connect to, thus making you root for that character and travel along with them through the story. There may also be characters that have traits you do not like, and that can sometimes be fun too!..waiting for an enemy of a character to get a taste of their own medicine, or waiting for your hero to defeat that character ..either way, the book has you hooked!

9/13/10

We have begun reading Unit 1 of SF, and spent a good amount of time last week examining "what makes a sentence". We discussed subject & predicate, complete thoughts, and edited/combined sentence fragments to create 5th grade quality sentences.
Coming up this week is a continued look at subject and predicates as well as a refresher on parts of speech.

8/30/10

English Language Arts will begin with Unit 1 of Scott Foresman followed by A View From Saturday by E.L. Konigsburg. Please try not to read ahead of time.
